How to get an 8 year old to bed?

rnotm2

I have an 8 year old that 1) won't go to sleep at night. I have tried everything. I set a specific time. He just stays up and plays all night. He has his own room, new bed, new spongebob sheets. 2) The other problem is that if he does go to sleep in his own bed 5/7 days or more of the week I wake up to find him someplace in my bed. I don't feel him sneak into my bed at night. Any suggestions?

Answer
It may be simpler than it looks.

First, talk to him. Tell him that he has to sleep at the time you've set and that he cannot go to your room.

If he can read, write the "rules" with him on a piece of paper and glue it over his bed. Tell him that each time he breaks the rules he'll get punished.

Set a routine before bed time. Be with him when he brushes his teeth, get a nice pyjama, and a nice book with stories and images.

Then, there's a great technique, it's called the "sleepy kiss". Kiss each part of his body saying "good-night" to his feet, his hands, his tummy, and end it by kissing each of his eyes. Remember to talk softly to relax the child.

Before going out of the room remind him of the rules:
*It is forbidden to play at bed-time
*he must go to sleep
*He cannot get out of his room
*He cannot go to your room during the night unless he is sick or there is a real problem.

Later, check out if he is really ok and that he hasn't broken any of the rules. If he has, put him back in bed and tell him that he will be punished the next day (Take away something he really likes, Tv, games, toys, chocolate, for the whole day.).

If he wakes up in your room, do the same, tell him he is punished and keep the punishment, otherwise it will not work.

I do not think that locking the door is any good. It will scare him and if he ever has a real problem in his room, you'll hate yourself for the rest of your days. Never lock a child in a room, it is extremelly dangerous and they must learn that the limit is not a lock on the door but YOU.

It may take some time, but be persistant and in a few days he'll be sleeping well in his bed the whole night.

Good Luck!
