I understand that it is normal for young kids to have imaginary friends, but why is it normal?
Mr.L
From what I here, it is completely normal and healthy for a young child to have an imaginary friend, but why? Why do they develop imaginary friends, and if you are familiar with psychology, what school of practice is your answer developed from?
Answer
I think it's normal simply because it demonstrates how imagination grows in children.
We've all seen the baby who really thinks that mommy hiding behind the blankie has truly disappeared. The smallest children don't have a concept of object permanence - to them, if they can't see it, it doesn't exist.
With time, they begin to realize that when mommy leaves the room, she still exists and will even come back in a minute. Their imaginations have developed to be able to encompass that concept - they don't have to see something for it to exist.
The imaginary friend comes when the child has developed to the point of being able to create his own reality. They begin to understand that dreams aren't real, that SpongeBob is a story, that playing and pretending their teddy bears can talk is a fun game.
The imaginary friend brings this concept together with a world that the toddler can control, and it's a dream come true. Think about it - what word does the toddler most often hear? NO! They often have no control over the real world, so the imaginary friend allows them some control over some things and someone. I think it can be a healthy way of learning how the world works and also getting some frustrations worked out sometimes.
