What does plankton eat?

Caitlin P

Answer
First off, plankton is too general of a term.

There are two very common types of plankton, the phytoplankon (Protista) and the zooplankton (Arthropoda, Mollusca, Chordata).

Phytoplankton are single-celled plankton that are capable of photosynthesis like plants. The most common groups include dinoflagellates (Alexandrium spp. commonly known as Red Tide), diatoms (Nitzschia spp.) and haptophytes (Isocrysis). They can occur by themselves (Dinophysis spp., Dictyocha spp., etc.) or in chains or colonies (Chateoceros spp.).

Zooplankton are multi-celled plankton that are not capable of photosynthesis but rather consume other organisms such as phyotplankton or smaller zooplankton. Organisms in this type include copepods which are fully planktonic throughout their life stages or animal larvae of clams, fish, crabs, and other aquatic organisms.

Now, if you're referring to PLANKTON in SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS.... Then he, ma'am, is a calanoid copepod, a zooplankton that eats on small phytoplankton.

Hurry this question needs an urgent answer! Survey?
